COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

A major piece of the Hall of Fame’s mission is to celebrate Philadelphia’s sports history through community programs. From various charitable donations to partnering with numerous organizations in the Philadelphia area, the Hall of Fame works to impact the lives of the public at large.

Darby Hilldales Historical Marker

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame joined project leader John Bossong in organizing the campaign for the historical marker to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Hilldale Giants 1925 Negro League World Series Championship. Supporters for the campaign included the boroughs of Darby and Yeadon, local historical societies and a dedicated group of local citizens.

Utilizing the Hall of Fame's fundraising and organizational experience, the campaign secured approval for the marker from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's (PHMC) and raised more than $8000 including a $3000 grant from Phillies Charities.

The marker at Cedar Avenue and Macdade Boulevard in Yeadon was dedicated on October 14, 2006.

Class III Art Contest

In December 2005, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame kicked off its first art contest. The subject of the contest, open to art students and emerging artists in the Philadelphia area, was a team portrait of the Hall of Fame’s third Induction Class. The competition consisted of over twenty initial inquiries from students and artists affiliated with the various area schools and art centers with the top three entries winning monetary prizes.

Garry Maddox Ribfest

Since 2005, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame has participated in this culinary challenge. Held annually over Phillies Alumni Weekend, proceeds benefit the Garry Maddox Youth Golf and Academics Program. The organization works hand in hand with urban schools to identify at risk 1st graders who would benefit from an extended school-day program that operates five days a week. Its goal is to work with its students on academic support and enrichment activities during the critical early years of education to improve their chances of academic success.

Beep Baseball Hall of Fame Classic

Working with the Blind Sports Organization (BSO), the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame hosts the only Beep Baseball Tournament in the region. The sport is a form of baseball played by visually impaired athletes. The Hall also contributes funds that help send our local team, the Pennsylvania Wolfpack, to the Beep Baseball World Series. The BSO works to promote, provide, and advocate sports, recreational, and social opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals.

Blue Flame – FDNY Charity Football Game

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame sponsored the initial contest between the Philadelphia Blue Flame and the FDNY Bravest played at Lincoln Financial Field. The Blue Flame (Philadelphia Police and Fire Football Club) participates in the National Public Safety Football League (NPSFL), a union of public safety agency football teams throughout the United States.

National Adoption Center

The Hall has also pledged support to the area’s National Adoption Center (NAC). The NAC functions to expand adoption opportunities for children living in foster care throughout the United States, and is a resource to families and to agencies who seek the permanency of caring homes for children.
