Immaculata basketball great will join Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame
Another member of the famous Mighty Macs has been honored for her part in basketball history.
Theresa Shank Grentz, who played on the Immaculata women's basketball teams that won the first three national championships, and just returned to her alma mater after a wildly successful coaching career, will be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on Dec. 12. Grentz's playing career at Immaculata included three All-American selections to go along with national championships in 1972-74.
Her coaching career included stops at St. Joseph's, Rutgers (where she won another national title), and Illinois, where she just stepped down in April after 12 seasons at the helm. Her career coaching record is 671-331 in 33 seasons, and she also led the 1992 U.S. women's basketball team to the bronze medal in Barcelona, Spain.
Grentz returned to Immaculata this year as assistant to the vice president for student affairs. She will be inducted along with a number of local sports greats, including former Flyer Bill Barber, and the late former Eagle Reggie White at the ceremony, held Dec. 12 at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's landing. Cathy Rush, Grentz's coach at Immaculata, was inducted into the hall in 2005.
